SAN CLEMENTE — San Clemente was trying to make a statement with its 57-3 South Coast League victory over Dana Hills Friday night.
Led by Chris Hayward, who threw three touchdowns and ran for one, the Tritons scored a single-game school-record 57 points in hopes of landing an at-large bid for the playoffs.
The defense limited Dana Hills to 44 yards in the first half and 109 yards in the game. The special teams blocked a punt to force a safety.
The Tritons opened the scoring with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that Hayward capped with a one-yard run. After stopping a Dolphin fake punt, Hayward threw 24 yards on the following play to Greg Lang for the touchdown and Zach Miederhoff’s kick made it 14-0.
After a blocked punt, which Dana Hills punter Matt Deter recovered in the end zone for a safety, Hayward threw 15 yards to Lang for another touchdown to put the Triton up 23-0. After San Clemente’s Tyler Wojciechowski recovered a Dolphin fumble, the Triton pushed their lead to 30-0 when Ryan Davis ran two yards for the score.
Cory Roesti ran nine yards to score with 7:03 remaining in the second quarter and Davis scored with 37 seconds left in the half to make it 43-0 at halftime.
Davis scored on the Tritons’ opening drive in the second half and Hayward threw 21 yards to Oscar Montecinos with 5:46 left in the third quarter.
Dana Hills’ Nathan Wannlund kicked a 36-yard field goal with 9:58 left in the game.
