Los Amigos was in uncharted territory Saturday against Edison in the second round of the Southern Section Division III girls’ tennis playoffs. The Lobos, coming off their first Garden Grove League girls’ tennis title, had never advanced past the first round until they defeated Cypress Thursday.

They will have to wait until next year to find out what the third round is all about. Edison (12-6), which played a much tougher nonleague schedule than Los Amigos (18-2), lost six of nine doubles sets but didn’t drop a singles set in winning, 12-6, at Edison.

The biggest surprise was the Chargers’ ease at handling Veronica Sommer, Los Amigos’ No. 1 singles player who had lost only one set all season. Sommer was swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

“Their No. 1 player [Cerissa Drumm] played well and that set the tone,” Los Amigos Coach Jeff Lewis said. “Veronica played defensive, not her typical aggressive style. They had her back on her heels and it just snowballed from there.”

Drumm said she was surprised she was able to beat Sommer so easily.

“I expected it to be closer,” Drumm said. “I knew she was good but I don’t know as compared to what. I think our league was a little tougher and we played Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Woodbridge in the preseason.”

Edison’s other two singles players, Jamie Kunze and Darcey McAndress, also cruised. Kunze won her sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, and McAndress won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

“They had three solid singles players,” Lewis said. “We overachieved to get this far. Today, we just didn’t have enough firepower.”

Edison, which finished second to Los Alamitos in the Sunset League, will have to get more out of its doubles sets if it is going to upset third-seeded North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The Chargers’ only doubles points came from the No. 1 team of Annie Bennington and Michelle Baran, who dropped only one game in three sets.
