Channel Islands Overpowers Small Outfit, 123-27

What happens when a high school with an enrollment of 70 students, Wilshire West, plays a school with an enrollment of more than 2,500, Channel Islands, in a boys’ basketball game?

It gets ugly. Channel Islands cruised to a 123-27 victory in a first-round game of the Nordhoff tournament Thursday night.

Bernabe Simon scored 30 points and Charles Merricks added 23 for the Raiders (1-0), who led, 99-15, after three quarters.

In another Nordhoff tournament game:

South Pasadena 72, Hueneme 55--The Vikings (0-1) held a 10-point lead midway through the second quarter before faltering. Robert Luna scored 15 points for Hueneme.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Burbank 77, Crescenta Valley 75--Eric Rohwer’s basket as time expired lifted the Bulldogs (2-0) in the semifinals of the Burbank-Hoover tournament at Burbank.

Rohwer scored after rebounding a miss by Carlos Escoto. Juni Williams scored 32 points for Burbank, which trailed by 22 points in the first half. The Bulldogs play Hoover in the final at 7:30 tonight.

St. Francis 63, Monroe 61--Anton Cunningham scored 15 of his 26 points in the second half to help the Golden Knights (1-1) rally from a seven-point halftime deficit in a consolation game of the Burbank-Hoover tournament. Anthony Johnson added 20 points and 13 rebounds for St. Francis.

Mark Cumbiss had 16 points for Monroe (1-2).

Newbury Park 86, Granada Hills 61--Daniel Bobik scored 19 of his 25 points in the first half for the Panthers (2-1) in a consolation game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Mike Bowers added 18 points for Newbury Park, which led by as many as 31 points in the second half.

Leon Pimky had 15 points for Granada Hills (1-2).

Taft 76, Santa Paula 64--Amir Bar-Netzer scored 29 points and Brandyn Fischer added 18 for the Toreadors (1-2) in a consolation game in the Simi Valley tournament.

Josh Jimenez had 34 points for Santa Paula (0-3).

Alemany 59, Littlerock 50--Jesus Castillon scored 21 points and Ivan Gonzalez added 14 for the Indians (1-2) in a Simi Valley tournament consolation game.

Isaiah Raheem scored 17 points and Phil Langford had 10 points and eight rebounds for Littlerock (0-3). Brian Brown also had eight rebounds.

Hart 78, Palmdale 63--Cory Johnson scored 23 points, including 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter, to help the Indians (2-1) pull away in a Simi Valley tournament consolation game.

Markus Carr scored 24 points, and Kevin Miller had 10 points and five rebounds for Palmdale (1-2).

Chatsworth 62, Notre Dame 43--Keith Stevens scored 24 points and Harold Shevlin added 14 for the Chancellors (3-2) in a Simi Valley tournament consolation game. Chatsworth held a 35-15 halftime lead.

Chris Ford scored 19 points for Notre Dame.

Antelope Valley 81, Victor Valley 61--Ziare Williams had 24 points and seven assists, and Mark Buckner added 19 points for the Antelopes in a second-round game of the Saugus tournament.

Le’Tre Kelly scored 10 points for Antelope Valley (2-1).

Highland 59, La Canada 55--Wendell Bonner led the Bulldogs (2-0) with 11 points and eight assists in a second-round game of the Saugus tournament.

Matt Moore led La Canada with 16 points, including four three-point baskets.

Elliott Parmalee, who had nine points and six steals for Highland, helped seal the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds.

Valencia 64, San Fernando 58--Kevin Woods scored 19 points and Jerrohn Jordan added 14 for the Vikings (2-0) in a first-round overtime game in the Saugus tournament.

Tyrone Pernell led the Tigers (0-1) with 25 points.

Westlake 61, Arroyo Grande 55--Senior guard Jake Stewart scored 27 points for the Warriors (1-0) in the first round of the Morro Bay tournament.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale 87, Cerro Coso 80--Ryan Sylva scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half to help the Vaqueros (4-3) rally from a 24-point, first-half deficit in the first round of the Bakersfield tournament.

Carl Biel led Glendale with 32 points and seven assists.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 80, Alhambra 53--Michelle Greco had 34 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and five steals for the Falcons (3-0), who completed pool play 3-0 and advanced to tonight’s championship game in the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Tara Gregory added 14 points and seven assists for the Falcons, who play North Hollywood in the final at 7:45.

North Hollywood 73, Canyon 44--Claudia Villa scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds to help the Huskies (3-0) reach the final of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Stephanie Wasserman had 13 points, 10 assists and eight steals for North Hollywood.

Canyon (2-2) was led by Valerie Wiggins with 21 points.

Moorpark 88, Bishop Diego 38--Sophomore center Damaris Hinojosa scored 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting for the Musketeers (2-0) in a first-round game of the Fillmore tournament. Jennifer Plante added 16 points for Moorpark.

Louisville 65, Cornerstone Christian 42--Becky Witt had 15 points and seven rebounds and Peggy Johnson added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Royals (2-0) in the first round of the Fillmore tournament.

La Canada 40, Pasadena Poly 31--Terrie Doizaki scored 17 points to lead the Spartans (2-0) at Poly.

Nordhoff 45, Taft (Bakersfield) 40--Neil Becker had 20 points, including three three-point baskets, and six assists for the Rangers (1-0) in the first round of the Bakersfield tournament. Erin Barker added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Nordhoff.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Hart 10, Antelope Valley 0--Katie McKeon, Erin Misaki, Laura Qualls and Amanda Stupar each scored two goals for the Indians (2-0) at Hart.

Canyon 3, Thousand Oaks 1--Nicole Modugno scored on an assist from Karen Hammonds early in the second half to put the Cowboys (1-0-1) ahead for good at Thousand Oaks (1-1).

Quartz Hill 4, Valencia 0--Kim Tahsuda scored the first of four second-half goals for the Rebels (1-0-1) at Quartz Hill.

Nordhoff 3, Oxnard 0--Goalkeeper Nadine Rangel had 16 saves for Oxnard (1-1) at Nordhoff (1-1). The Rangers scored all their goals in the second half.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Birmingham 3, Granada Hills 0--Jesus Medellin and Adonay Jovel each scored first-half goals for the Braves (4-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills (0-1-1 in conference).

Quartz Hill 5, Valencia 0--Hiram Johnson scored two second-half goals and the Rebels (1-1) easily defeated the Vikings (1-1) at Quartz Hill.

Glendale 2, Crespi 1--Manuel Bermudez and Vaagn Babayan each scored second-half goals for the Dynamiters (1-0) in a pool-play game of the Burroughs tournament.

Santa Paula 2, St. Bonaventure 0--Carlos Herrejon and Ricardo Lira each scored for the Cardinals (1-1) at Santa Paula.

Juan Elias had seven saves for Santa Paula. Mike Conway stopped 18 shots for the Seraphs (1-1).

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 13, Burroughs 8--Jeanine Jackson scored five goals, Stephanie Dashiel added three and goalie Loren Letteau had 12 saves for the Wolverines (1-0, 1-0) in a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake.

Charisse Older scored five goals for the Indians (0-1, 0-1).
