In the Buena Park boys’ basketball tournament:
Kennedy 38, Garden Grove 36--Dinsmore Sohn hit a shot with 15 seconds left to seal Pat O’Hearn’s first victory as head coach for Kennedy (1-1). Tony Jimmerson led the Fighting Irish with 15 points.
In the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic boys’ basketball tournament:
Newport Harbor 41, Troy 38--Scott Archbold made a running one-hander with 18 seconds remaining, was fouled and made the free throw to give Newport Hrabor (2-0) the victory in pool play.
In the Brea Olinda Backyard Bash boys’ basketball tournament:
Calvary Chapel 68, Esperanza 57--Kevin Falconer scored 21 points and Joe Ortiz added 19 for Calvary Chapel (2-0). Fifth-ranked Esperanza falls to 0-2.
In the Carson girls’ basketball tournament in Carson City (Nev.):
Marina 70, Reno (Nev.) Wooster 35--Marisa Emde scored 18 points and had five rebounds in a victory for Marina (3-0). The Vikings forced Wooster (0-1) to commit 35 turnovers. Marina also had 19 steals.
The Vikings play defending state large-schools champion Reno McQueen in the semifinals today at 5:30. Marina has won this tournament for the past two years.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Santa Ana Valley 2, Century 1--Aaron Casorena scored what proved to be the game-winner during the 50th minute on a header off a corner kick. Santa Ana Valley improved to 2-0; Century dropped to 1-1.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Esperanza 1, Mater Dei 0--Amy Maloney scored on a direct free kick from 20 yards in the 34th minute to give eighth-ranked Esperanza the victory over fourth-ranked Mater Dei (0-1).
El Dorado 1, Laguna Hills 0--Krista Kudron scored the game-winning goal in the first half to lead El Dorado (2-0) over sixth-ranked Laguna Hills.
