Marquis, Lyttle Lead Golden West to Victory

Mariah Marquis had 20 kills, Lorna Lyttle had 13 and Beth Rosen contributed 46 assists for Golden West, which defeated Fullerton, 15-5, 15-10, 15-6, and will be playing for its fourth consecutive state volleyball title at 5 p.m. today.

The third meeting between Golden West and Fullerton--the teams had split the previous two matches--took only 66 minutes. The Rustlers (25-1) have not lost a game in the last 10 matches.

In the semifinals of the women’s state soccer tournament:

American River 3, Cypress 1--Cypress (17-1-1) lost leading scorer Vedda Desatoff in the first half because of a right leg injury and the Chargers could not recover. Colby Morgan scored in the second half for Cypress.

In the Orange Coast men’s basketball tournament:

Irvine Valley 86, Long Beach 69--Daryl Todd had 12 offensive rebounds as Irvine Valley defeated Long Beach (7-3) in the championship final of the Orange Coast tournament. Todd scored 29 points and had 15 rebounds in the game.

Brandon Hearvey scored 20 points and had nine rebounds for the Lasers (5-3).

Fabian Nixon scored 24 points for Long Beach.

In the Grossmont tournament:

Rancho Santiago 81, Grossmont 68--Lohnnie Tape scored 24 points as Rancho Santiago defeated Grossmont (5-4) in the third-place game. Teammate Mark Saukkola scored 18 points for the Dons (6-2).

Danny English had 30 points for host Grossmont.

In the Las Vegas tournament:

Los Angeles Valley 71, Cypress 66--The Chargers led by three at the half, but were outscored, 39-31, in the second half of the championship game. Frankie Floyd scored 18 points and Kevin Morris had 17 for Cypress (2-6).

In a nonconference game:

Golden West 74, Orange Coast 51--Ray Jimmerson had 21 points and Ahmad Bentley scored 14 to lead Golden West (3-3) to the nonconference victory.

In the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:

Cuesta 69, Orange Coast 60--Dianne Pulido led Orange Coast (8-2) with 24 points and 12 rebounds in the championship loss. Saki Takemoto had 14 points for the Pirates. Pulido and Takemoto were named to the all-tournament team. Cuesta’s Sarah Mavety had 28 points and was named most valuable player.

Rancho Santiago 74, Sacramento Cosumnes River 71--The Dons took third place and are off to their best start in school history. Tanya Whitlock scored 23 points, Paline McGee had 22 and Chanel Neal 17 for Rancho Santiago (8-1).
