Twins Give Newbury Park Double Vision

Share

One Collins twin was more than Newbury Park High could handle. Two was way too much.

Jason Collins, Harvard Westlake’s 6-foot-10 senior center, scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked six shots and the Wolverines (2-0) cruised to a 94-45 victory over the Panthers in pool play of the Thousand Oaks tournament Tuesday night at Thousand Oaks High.

Jarron Collins, a 6-9 forward, added 15 points and 10 rebounds and 6-5 forward Rickey Cabrera had 14 points.

“We would have had to shoot 90% to have had a chance,” said Newbury Park Coach Steve Johnson.

Daniel Bobik scored 13 points for Newbury Park (3-3).

The Panthers did have their moments, usually when one twin was on the bench. Over the final four minutes of the second quarter, Newbury Park played tough defense, holding the Wolverines to a layup by Cabrera. Harvard missed its last six shots of the half.

But Newbury Park struggled offensively, even with only one Collins clogging the middle. Jason Collins had four blocked shots in the second quarter.

The Panthers trailed, 44-28, early in the third quarter when a 15-0 run by Harvard, defending State Division III champion, turned the game into a complete rout.
