Miley High Performance Lifts Irvine

Ted Miley made every shot, scoring 18 points to help Irvine defeat Kennedy, 54-40, in the first round of the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday at Irvine High.

Miley made seven of seven shots from the field and all four of his free throws for Irvine (4-3), which advanced to a second-round game against Palos Verdes Chadwick. Irvine outscored Kennedy, 20-12, in the fourth quarter to break open a close game.

Jacob Kunz scored 16 points for Kennedy (6-2).

In other first-round games at the Irvine World News tournament:

Capistrano Valley 67, La Habra 36--Austin Moherman scored 20 points for Capistrano Valley, which led at halftime, 40-21.

Estancia 75, Los Amigos 53--Sam Nelson had 26 points and seven rebounds for Estancia (6-1), which led, 23-7, after one quarter and was never threatened. Nelson was 10 for 11 from the field and four for five from three-point range.

Dana Hills 75, West Covina 38--Todd Pittman scored 16 points for Dana Hills, ranked eighth in the county.

Woodbridge 91, Paramount 34--Chris Burgess had 31 points and 17 rebounds--12 on offense--for second-ranked Woodbridge (5-1).

In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:

El Dorado 54, Canyon 32--Ryan Ayer scored 23 points for El Dorado (6-2) in a pool-play victory.

In the Riverside La Sierra Academy tournament:

Orangewood Academy 70, Calimesa Mesa Grande Academy 57--Forward Joey Oswald scored 25 points for Orangewood in a first-round victory.

In the consolation round of the Sonora Cage Classic:

Edison 85, Rancho Alamitos 49--Dimitri Karnezif scored 22 points for Edison (3-3). Chris Torina scored 31 points for Rancho Alamitos (0-7).

La Mirada 60, Savanna 54--Enele Boone scored 29 points for Savanna (1-7).

In pool play at the Troy tournament:

Cypress 57, Buena Park 45--Wes Bunn scored 29 points for Cypress.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Bolsa Grande 58, Laguna Beach 50--Duke Nguyen scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter for Bolsa Grande (4-5).

Calvary Chapel 74, Santa Ana Valley 57--Kevin Falconer scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half for sixth-ranked Calvary Chapel (7-2).

Los Alamitos 75, Pasadena Muir 72--The Griffins almost squandered a 19-point halftime lead, but Matt Komer scored six of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the Griffins (8-1) hold off Muir’s rally.

Mission Viejo 70, Santa Ana 33--Gabe Burt scored 23 points and Commander King had 14 points and eight assists for Mission Viejo (6-3).

Orange 45, Ocean View 41--Brian Krauss scored 19 points for Orange (7-1).

St. Margaret’s 67, Carlsbad Army-Navy 34--Josh Del Pino made nine of 14 field goals and scored 20 points for St. Margaret’s (3-3).

Whittier 66, Marina 61--Donald Lank scored 19 points for Marina (7-2).

In the Lakewood Artesia/Brethren Christian girls’ basketball tournament:

Brethren Christian 49, Redondo Beach 33--Cindy Oparah scored 23 points for Brethren Christian (3-0).

Ocean View 64, Calvary Chapel 48--Anna Lembke had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Jennifer Tuiolosega had 23 points and six assists for fifth-ranked Ocean View (5-1).

In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:

El Dorado 76, Canyon 39--Stephanie Patten scored 23 points for El Dorado (3-3) in a pool-play game.

In pool play at the La Quinta tournament:

Troy 61, Santiago 37--Allaria Haines scored 29 points and Tammi Yonamine made four of four shots from three-point range for Troy.

In the La Sierra Academy Tournament:

Orangewood Academy 46, Beaumont 30--Jenni Barron had 24 points and 17 rebounds for Orangewood (1-4) in a first-round victory.

In nonleague games:

Estancia 37, Villa Park 34--Jill Black had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Estancia (6-4).

Marina 61, Long Beach Poly 57--Marina led, 23-10, after the first-quarter lead, then held on for the victory. Natalie Nakase added 13 points, eight assists and six steals for the seventh-ranked Vikings (7-1).

Sonora 62, Norwalk 37--Sara Fister had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Sonora (3-5).

Tustin 57, El Modena 47--Shamekia Perkins scored 31 points for Tustin (4-5).
