SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The battle started when the ball was tossed in Thursday night’s Marmonte League game between Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks highs.

It didn’t end until Jenn Detmer’s basket with nine seconds remaining gave Thousand Oaks a 66-64 victory over the Pioneers.

Detmer scored with 27 points for Thousand Oaks (4-2, 2-0 in league play).

“These two teams can never get together and have a game where someone can relax,” Thousand Oaks coach Chuck Brown said. “It’s always like this.”

Simi Valley (4-2, 1-1) nearly had the game wrapped up in the final minutes. After Jensa Metcalf’s three-point play, Simi Valley led 58-51 with just over three minutes remaining. But in a game where 46 fouls were called, Thousand Oaks didn’t give up.

Andi Terrada scored nine points in the stretch, rallying the Lancers to a 62-62 tie.

With the score tied, 64-64, Simi Valley committed a turnover with 23 seconds left.

Thousand Oaks worked the clock down and missed one shot, but Detmer came up with a rebound three feet to the left of the hoop. She banked in the game-winner.

“This is a new team so it takes time for us to come together,” Detmer said. “I’m proud of what we did tonight.”

Shannon Malia scored 18 points for Simi Valley, Jamie Sturdivant added 17 and Christina Mosesso had 14.

“Overall, we did really well tonight,” Metcalf said. “It was just a panic situation at the end.

“That’s OK. We will be ready for them when they come to our place.”

Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks tied for the Marmonte League title last season.

The teams combined for 26 fouls in the first half, and three players fouled out of the game.
