Valencia’s Leon Ineligible to Play

Junior forward Fabian Leon, who averages 11.6 points and 10 rebounds for the Valencia High boys’ basketball team, has been declared academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. Leon had 20 points and 20 rebounds Tuesday in an 80-66 victory over Saugus.

Other players who were declared academically ineligible Wednesday were Kerry Yates, a forward who averages 14.3 points for the Palmdale boys’ team, and forwards Jessica Epperson and Katie Gleeson, both starters on the Saugus girls’ team.

Quartz Hill has lost Mike Kott, the defending Golden League wrestling champion at 152 pounds, and Don Simmons, a 160-pounder. Both are academic casualties.

The Grant High boys’ soccer team has lost senior sweeper Nestor Arevalo for disciplinary reasons and freshman midfielder Leslys Balacios, who is academically ineligible for the remainder of the season.

Sergio Fuceda, a starting defender on the Reseda High boys’ soccer team, is academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. However, two previously ineligible Regents, sophomore midfielder Rocky Monzon and junior defender Fred Schiffer, have been cleared to play, Coach Julio Castillo said.

New Matador: Mira Costa High’s Kristin Sigel, the Southern Section Division I co-most valuable player in volleyball, has committed to play at Cal State Northridge, said her coach, DaeLea Aldrich.

On the move: Ryan Cope, a highly regarded junior infielder, has transferred from Thousand Oaks High to Westlake High.

Cope, who led the Thousand Oaks American Legion team with a .373 batting average, will be eligible this season.

Gone: Justin Saad-Anthony, a freshman forward averaging 8.7 rebounds, has quit the El Camino Real High boys’ team.
