Santa Margarita Rallies to Win in Water Polo

Santa Margarita, ranked fifth in Orange County, scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat No. 8 Mission Viejo, 3-2, in a nonleague girls’ water polo game Friday at Mission Viejo.

Santa Margarita took a 1-0 lead in the second quarter, but Mission Viejo (13-6) got two goals from Chelsea Rowlands in the third to take the lead, 3-2.

Katie Ferguson had two goals and Jamie Kroeze had 13 saves for Santa Margarita.

In other nonleague girls’ water polo:

Corona del Mar 11, Tustin 5--Meagan Hardt scored seven goals to lead Corona del Mar (7-9). Genelle Gentry had seven saves for Corona del Mar.

Irvine 10, Capistrano Valley 4--Nicole Huszcz scored a season-high four goals for visiting Irvine (18-2), ranked second in the county.

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Pacifica 60, Santiago 31--Jaimee Pendergast scored 15 and Mindyn McCurdy had 12 to lead Pacifica (19-6, 10-1).

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

Garden Grove 1, La Quinta 0--Rhiannon Lee scored in the 27th minute off a crossing pass from Lucy Chittenden.

Pacifica 9, Santiago 0--Amanda Freed scored her 31st goal of the season for Pacifica (14-6, 11-0). Heather Fellows posted her 10th consecutive shutout. Mary Malloy scored twice in the second half for the Mariners. Diana DeAugustine, Rachel Peterson and Kim Wahlstrom each scored on penalty kicks.
