Mendiola Sets Mark in El Toro Loss

El Toro’s Fabrizio Mendiola set an Orange County record with 11 three-pointers, but the Chargers lost to host Santa Margarita, 79-69, in Sea View League boys’ basketball game Friday.

Mendiola, who finished with 38 points, broke the record of 10 set by Capistrano Valley’s Tom Airey twice in 1991 and University’s Demitrius Ziegler in 1992. The 11 three-pointers ties Mendiola for 10th place in the Southern Section.

Tenth-ranked Santa Margarita (17-6, 7-1) took a 44-32 halftime lead. Five players scored in double figures for the Eagles. T.J. Williams led Santa Margarita with 21 points and nine assists, Brad Gloger scored 17, Craig Rice and Ryan Forehan-Kelly each scored 14, and Carson Palmer had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

In other Sea View League games:

Newport Harbor 49, Corona del Mar 33--Danny Pulido scored 11 points for host Newport Harbor (13-10, 4-4).

Woodbridge 68, Irvine 55--William Stovall scored 22 points and Chris Burgess had 13 for visiting Woodbridge (20-4, 7-0), ranked second in the county.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 59, Santa Ana Valley 48--Eric Chenowith had 21 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots for host Villa Park (19-4, 8-0).

Orange 44, Canyon 43--Brian Krauss and Juan Dotson made key baskets in the fourth quarter as host Orange came from behind to win. Canyon led by six points when Krauss made two three-pointers for the Panthers (17-5, 6-2).

Krauss scored 19 points and Dotson scored 11.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 65, Kennedy 42--Cypress outscored Kennedy 19-1 in the first five minutes of the second half. Travis Weaver hit five three-pointers and finished with 23 points to lead Cypress (17-7, 7-1).

Katella 63, Loara 51--Kenny Moreno scored 22 points for visiting Katella (18-5, 6-2).

El Dorado 52, Century 40--Mike Gartner scored 22 points and Ryan Ayer scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds and six blocks for El Dorado (18-6, 5-3).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 80, Santiago 56--Jeff Davidson scored 19 points for host Pacifica (14-11, 8-3).

Rancho Alamitos 53, Los Amigos 43--Chris Torina scored a game-high 20 points for Rancho Alamitos (1-21, 1-9). Mike Wahl led Los Amigos (11-12, 5-5) with 15 points.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 38, Tustin 33--Tony Dow scored 11 points and had five assists for host Ocean View (17-6, 6-2).

Westminster 56, Santa Ana 42--Brandon Fox scored 17 points and Geoff Henderson had 15 in the victory for Westminster.

Servite 71, Saddleback 54--Steve Shea scored 19 points and had nine rebounds for host Servite (18-6, 7-1), which was assessed a technical foul in the fourth quarter after Friar fans had covered the court with rolls of toilet paper.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 79, Anaheim 57--Sean Wink scored 20 points for host Brea (21-3, 8-0), ranked sixth in the county and fourth in Division II-A.

Valencia 51, Magnolia 49--Valencia outscored Magnolia, 20-6, in the last four minutes to comeback from a 12-point deficit. John Frechette scored seven of his 15 to lead Valencia (17-7, 7-1).

Western 50, Savanna 39--Jahan Rana scored 17 points for visiting Western (6-18, 2-6).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 56, Laguna Hills 40--Chris Sirianni scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Laguna Bech (9-1, 2-6).

University 92, Costa Mesa 59--Eric Palmer scored 28 points for University (17-6, 6-2).

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 99, Trabuco Hills 64--Tom Lippold scored 21 points and David Castleton added 20 points for the top-ranked Monarchs (23-2, 8-0), who shot 51% from the field and made 90% (34 of 38) of their free throws.

Chris Majors scored 20 points for Trabuco Hills (7-17, 0-8).

Capistrano Valley 55, San Clemente 54--San Clemente missed four shots from within five feet during the final five seconds of eight-ranked Capistrano Valley’s upset victory. Mike Stowell made two free-throws with eight seconds left to give the Cougars the one-point lead.

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 54, Marina 45--Matt Komer scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead fifth-ranked Los Alamitos (21-3, 8-0), which clinched at least a tie for the league championship.
