Final Moorpark vs. Brea Olinda

Where--Pyramid, 6:15 p.m.

Moorpark (25-2)--The Musketeers are making their first trip to the section final, in boys’ or girls’ basketball, after beating Compton Dominguez, 52-42. It’s the first time the girls’ program has gone beyond the quarterfinals. Damaris Hinojosa (18.6 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.5 steals, 2.3 blocks), a point-forward type of player, is the key offensive force; she likes going coast-to-coast on a team that relies on running and gunning--because it certainly doesn’t have the height. Tracy Milburn (17.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 7.9 assists) is also a factor. Coach Brent Milburn, who says his team must play a near-perfect game, is keeping things close to the vest, but said Thursday he hopes to make it a half-court game. Is he sandbagging? That’s opposite of what the Musketeers usually do, which is run, press and shoot, shoot, shoot in an up-tempo style.

Brea Olinda (26-3)--Ranked No. 1 in the state, the top-seeded Ladycats are coming off a 52-42 semifinal victory over fourth-seeded (and 11th-ranked) La Puente Bishop Amat, which had the three things needed to eliminate Brea: a competent point guard, an accurate three-point shooter, and a 6-foot-4 post player who wasn’t a stiff. It still didn’t matter. The Ladycats are in position to win their ninth consecutive section title because they have five different players who can take a commanding role in the game--six are shooting 44% or better from the field. They would do well to concentrate on Hinojosa and stay out of foul trouble--which they haven’t done the last two games.

Key to the game--Composure and depth perception. Brea has been here before and is more used to the expansive shooting backdrop and the championship routine. Moorpark is not used to this environment and, with as many shots as the Musketkeers take (into the 60s), they could have real problems. Brea won’t be rattled if things don’t go perfectly. Can Moorpark say the same thing?
