Sanders Leads the Way as Pasadena Muir Wins

Senior forward Tiana Sanders had 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead top-seeded Pasadena Muir to a 45-41 victory over Mission Hills Alemany in the Southern Section Division III-AA final Saturday at the Pyramid.

Although the Mustangs (22-7) turned the ball over 30 times and trailed, 22-18, at the half, they took control in the second half.

Kelli Kobayashi scored 19 points, including three three-pointers, for Alemany (23-5).

Laguna Hills 54, Cerritos Gahr 40--Top-seeded Laguna Hills (27-3) won its first section title by outscoring Gahr (19-9) by 17 points in the third quarter.

Six-foot-six Tayyiba Haneef scored 17 points, and Whitney Houser had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Laguna Hills.

Monet Sykes led Gahr with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 54, Ojai Nordhoff 35--Bishop Montgomery, the defending Division III state champion, moved closer to defending its title by winning the Division III-A final.

Danielle Graham had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Bishop Montgomery, which improved to 25-3.

Erin Barker had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Nordhoff (23-5).

Playa del Rey St. Bernard 68, Santa Ynez 50--St. Bernard (21-6) avenged last year’s title loss to Santa Ynez with an easy win in the Division IV-AA final.

Guard Shannon Howell had 16 points off the bench to lead the Vikings. Guard Katie Pyle had 18 points for top-seeded Santa Ynez (24-3).

Covina Western Christian 60, Capistrano Valley Christian 49--Top-seeded Western Christian, which lost the title game last season, won the first Division V-AA championship game in school history.

Charlene Simril led the way for Western Christian (22-4) with 19 points. Second-seeded Capistrano Valley Christian (23-6) was led by Hayley Hall’s 16 points.

CITY SECTION

Hamilton 47, Gardena 40--The Yankees (18-5) broke open a close game in the second quarter with an 8-0 run and never looked back in the Division 3-A final at Cal State Los Angeles.

Senior guard Rachel Krakoff led Hamilton to its first 3-A title by scoring 11 points and being the key player on a defense that forced 10 turnovers.

Tameka Jackson, a junior center, had 19 points and 15 rebounds for Gardens (5-12).
