Fabrizio Blasts Three of a Kind

Anthony Fabrizio of Burroughs High opened Foothill League play Tuesday with a bang--three of them, to be exact.

The senior first baseman hit three home runs to power the Indians (4-2) to a 9-2 victory over Canyon in Canyon Country.

Fabrizio hit solo home runs in his first two at-bats, was intentionally walked in the fifth inning and capped his three-for-three outing with a three-run homer in the seventh.

In other Foothill League openers:

Hart 10, Saugus 0--Bobby Graves (2-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 for the Indians at Newhall.

Eric Horvat was three for three and scored a run for the Indians (5-1).

Valencia 5, Burbank 2--Chris Honaker (2-0) pitched a six-hitter, struck out 13 and walked one for the Vikings (4-1) at Burbank (2-3).

In other games:

Chaminade 4, Notre Dame 2--Chris Gray allowed five hits in 6 1/3 innings and hit a three-run home run for the Eagles (6-0) in a Mission League opener at Notre Dame (4-2).

Chris Martinez had three hits and drove in one run for Chaminade.

Alemany 7, Crespi 4--Jeff Myers had two hits and three RBIs, and Robert Torres had two hits and two RBIs for the Indians (5-1), who beat All-Southern Section pitcher Brian Felten in a Mission League opener at Valley College.

Hueneme 3, Santa Barbara 2--Ruben Neri’s two-out, fifth-inning single scored Victor Navarro with the winning run for the Vikings (4-2) in a Channel League opener at Hueneme.

North Hollywood 13, Monroe 2--Merrill Dunn, who had two doubles and an RBI, allowed three hits and struck out six in five innings for the Huskies (6-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at North Hollywood.

The Huskies knocked Monroe ace John Ennis out of the game by scoring nine runs, seven earned, on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Grant 4, Reseda 3--Jeremy Horowitz allowed nine hits--seven for extra bases--but struck out 10 and walked none for the Lancers (1-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Reseda (2-1).

Sylmar 14, Van Nuys 2--Carlos Gonzalez had two hits, three RBIs and scored four runs for the Spartans (3-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Sylmar.

Cleveland 3, Birmingham 2--Chris Vasquez had two hits and scored the winning run for the Cavaliers (3-3) on a seventh-inning error in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Birmingham (3-3).

Taft 4, San Fernando 2--The Toreadors (6-1) scored three runs in the fourth on four hits and an error to beat the Tigers (4-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at San Fernando.

Chatsworth 16, Granada Hills 4--David Sark had a home run, a triple and four RBIs for the Chancellors (3-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Granada Hills (3-3).

L.A. Baptist 16, Village Christian 1--Peter Dirksen hit four doubles and Ed Almeida had three hits and three RBIs for the Knights (4-2) in an Alpha League opener at L.A. Baptist.

Ventura 8, Highland 3--Sophomore right-hander Jason Branch (1-1) pitched a one-hitter and struck out 16 for the Cougars in a nonleague game at Highland.

Victor Valley 14-6, Quartz Hill 13-7--Quartz Hill pitchers issued 17 walks in a nonleague doubleheader at Victor Valley.

Victor Valley rallied for 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game.

Jo’Sean Lyles was five for nine with two home runs and five RBIs in the two games for Quartz Hill (5-1).

Rio Mesa 3, Santa Clara 2--Paul Ayala led off the sixth with a double and later scored on a passed ball to lift the Spartans (6-0) in a nonleague game at Rio Mesa.
