Hoover Pitchers Clean Up With a Tidy No-Hitter, 7-0

Cori Herbert and Erin Lucero of Hoover High combined on a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Verdugo Hills in pool play of the Hoover tournament Thursday.

Herbert struck out eight and walked three over six innings. Lucero struck out one batter in the seventh, handing Verdugo Hills, defending City Section 3-A champion, its first loss of the season.

Justine Takizawahad three hits and scored twice for Hoover (5-2).

Westlake 3, Simi Valley 2--Lisa Valdalma’s two-run single in the fifth inning upset the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Santa Susana Park.

Freshman right-hander Erin Voltz (3-1) scattered nine hits for the Warriors (3-3, 1-1). She struck out three and walked one.

Simi Valley (5-1, 1-1), top-ranked in The Times’ regional poll, built a 2-1 lead with runs in the second and fourth innings. Alex Ingraham , who had two hits, scored both runs, and Tracie Hall had three hits.

Newbury Park 9, Channel Islands 0--Sophomore right-hander Alyson Blum pitched a no-hitter, striking out six, in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.

Candace Roberts had three hits and three RBIs for the Panthers (10-0, 2-0), ranked sixth.

Saugus 5, Crescenta Valley 0--Nicole Giordano pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10, for the Centurions at Crescenta Valley.

Saugus (7-2) is ranked eighth in the region while the Falcons (7-1) are ranked fourth.

North Hollywood 6, Wilson 3--The Huskies (4-5) scored six runs in the fourth inning, when Claudia Villa hit a two-run home run and Takui Karapogosyan added a solo shot at North Hollywood.

Taft 6, Grant 2--Melissa Viramontes led off the game with a home run and Danielle Cabello stole home for the Toreadors (3-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Canoga Park 18, Birmingham 1--Carina Leon doubled, tripled and drove in four runs, and Jenny Pitillo had three hits for the Hunters (3-2) at Birmingham.

Pitillo (3-2) pitched a one-hitter, striking out six and walking one. The only hit was a homer by Yvonne Velazquez in the fourth.
