Saddleback Hires Women’s Coach

Vicki Mallett, an assistant coach at Fullerton College this past season, has been named women’s basketball coach at Saddleback College.

Mallett, a 1985 graduate of El Toro High, is a former player at Cal State Northridge. She also coached at Loara High, where her teams were 24-24 in two seasons.

Los Alamitos forward Cyndi Tredway, a second-team Times all-county selection in soccer, has signed a letter of intent to play at UC Irvine. The Griffins won the Southern Section Division I soccer championship last month.

Tom White, a linebacker at La Habra, has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal State Northridge, according to Coach Rick Milhizer.

White (6-1, 210) had 63 tackles, including five sacks, for the Highlanders. He also played fullback and rushed for 462 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

He is expected to play linebacker at Northridge.

Cindy Shi of Orange is the top-seeded player in women’s singles at the U.S. National Badminton Championships, which begin today at the Orange County Badminton Club, 1432 N. Main St., Orange. Opening ceremonies begin at 5:30 p.m.

Shi will also compete in women’s and mixed doubles. Ignatius Rusli, coach at the Orange County Badminton Club, will compete in men’s singles and doubles.

Tickets are available for $5 daily for preliminary rounds, and $10 for Sunday’s finals. Competition begins at 10 a.m. each day. A four-day pass is available for $20. Ticket sales will benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Assn. of Orange County.
