Smith and Stromsberg Deliver Clutch Singles for Notre Dame
Shawn Smith and Kevin Stromsberg each drove in runs with two-out singles in the seventh inning to help Notre Dame defeat Alemany, 6-5, in a Mission League game Tuesday at Alemany.
The Indians (8-6, 1-2 in league play) loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh before Smith (2-0) got Jeff Myers to pop up to second base to end the game.
Alemany had taken a 5-4 lead on Joe Melagrano’s fifth-inning home run.
Notre Dame improved to 12-5, 2-1 in league.

Palmdale 13, Quartz Hill 9--The Falcons trailed 9-1 before rallying with seven runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the sixth in a Golden League game at Palmdale (13-2, 3-1).
Jo’Sean Lyles had two home runs for Quartz Hill (9-5, 1-3).
Highland 8, Littlerock 2--Dan O’Haver threw a three-hitter, struck out 10 and didn’t give up an earned run for the Bulldogs in a Golden League game at Highland (4-11, 1-3).
O’Haver (2-3) had a perfect game for 4 2/3 innings before giving up a two-out double to Kurt Raine.
Camarillo 12, Dos Pueblos 9--The Scorpions (12-3-1) scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the Santa Barbara tournament game at Dos Pueblos (7-5).
John Medina hit a run-scoring single to tie the score, 9-9, and Mike Bannon scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk to Jay Caliguiri, who finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Crespi 10, Loyola 3--Luke Worgan had three hits, drove in four runs and scored two, and Andy Campanella had three hits and scored two runs for the Celts (10-5, 2-1) in a Mission League game at Loyola.
Nordhoff 7, Moorpark 5--The Rangers (5-6, 3-1) parlayed four hits and four walks into a six-run fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead in a Frontier League game at Moorpark.
Kennedy 8, Birmingham 2--Jon Garland threw a five-hitter, struck out 15 and allowed one earned run for the Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy (13-5, 5-0).
Garland (5-1) had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for the Golden Cougars (13-5, 5-0).
Taft 11, Granada Hills 4--Jeff Spector had four hits and drove in five runs for the Toreadors (10-5, 3-2) in Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.
Spector and his brothers Mitch and Justin combined for 10 hits for Taft. Dan Frisbee had a three-run home run and drove in all the runs for Granada Hills (4-10, 0-5).
Chatsworth 5, San Fernando 4--Tim Wiegand had two hits and scored two runs for the Chancellors (9-5, 4-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando (9-6, 0-5).
Sylmar 6, Monroe 5--Chris Cervantes hit a one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Spartans (8-5, 5-0) the victory in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.
Reseda 7, Poly 2--Alfredo Saenz had three hits and drove in four runs, and Travis Rutter pitched a four-hitter, striking out five for the Regents in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly.
North Hollywood 6, Van Nuys 1--Cesar Soto and Jose Figueroa each had two hits for host North Hollywood (13-2, 5-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.
Canoga Park 15, Grant 1--Kevin Carlsen had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, for the Hunters (2-9, 1-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Lanark Park.
Verdugo Hills 8, Belmont 2--Nick LoSardo and Jason Hovestreydt combined on a three-hitter for the Dons (5-1, 4-1) in Northern Conference game.
