Athletes to Watch

BOYS

* Dominique Degrammont, Tustin--Top hurdler in the state with the nation’s second-best time this year in the 110 high hurdles (13.74) and in the 300 intermediate hurdles (37.50).

* Miguel Fletcher, Mission Hills Alemany--Top junior sprinter in the nation. He has recorded personal bests of 10.47 in the 100 and 21.06 in the 200.

* Obea Moore, Pasadena Muir--Perhaps the top male athlete in the Southland. A two-time defending 400-meter state champion, who has fourth-fastest prep time ever in the event in 45.14 seconds. Competed in Olympic trials in Atlanta last June. The senior has the fastest time in the nation this year in the 800 (1:50.60) and fastest last year in the 200 (20.77).

* Scott Moser, Huntington Beach--His discus throw of 206 feet 2 inches is the fourth-best ever in the state.

* Pasadena Muir 1,600-meter relay team--Anchored by Moore, the Mustangs have a chance to break Hawthorne’s 12-year state record of 3:07.40. Their best time was recorded last year (3:08.66).

GIRLS

* Kinshasa Davis, Long Beach Wilson--Will try to become the first female to win the 200 and 400 in the state meet in June.

* Malika Edmonson, Playa Del Rey St. Bernard--The USC-bound senior is the defending state champion in the 100 (11.73) and 200 (23.47) but may not be favored in either race if Angela Williams and Davis are sound.

* Nicole Hoxie, Riverside North--Hoxie is the defending state champion in the 100 high hurdles (13.79) and 300 low hurdles (41.78).

* Angela Williams, Chino--After a brilliant freshman year in which she ran an 11.24 in the 100, Williams struggled through an injury-cursed sophomore season but was still the youngest competitor in the Olympic trials last year.

* Long Beach Wilson and St. Bernard relay teams--Either of these schools has the capability of breaking Hawthorne’s 1985 state record in the 400 relay (45.11) and Muir’s 1985 mark of 3:37.69 in the 1,600 relay.
