El Toro Can’t Solve Woodbridge’s Mastery

Share

The Woodbridge softball team, ranked third in Orange County and fourth in the state, extended its winning streak to 15 games Tuesday at El Toro with a 3-1 victory over the Chargers in the Sea View League opener.

Woodbridge is 20-2, 1-0 in league. Three victories are over El Toro (15-5-1, 0-1), which is fifth in the county and seventh in the state.

Unlike its recent 5-0 loss in the final of the Woodbridge Easter Classic, El Toro got to Woodbridge pitcher Christy Robitaille (14-2) early, scoring in the first inning on Laura Joiner’s infield hit, a stolen base and Nicole Everett’s run-scoring single. But Robitaille gave up only two hits after that.

El Toro cruised into the fourth behind pitcher Suzanne Guy, who retired the first 10 batters. But once a runner got on base, Guy (12-4) was a different pitcher and Woodbridge a different lineup.

The lead runner in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings scored as the Warrior bats came to life. Lizzy Lemire’s liner scored Lisa Watanabe (whose single broke up the perfect game); Ashley Boone’s two-out single to left scored pinch-runner Kari Duperron with the winning run, and Lindsey Cohan’s grounder scored Nichole Thompson with the insurance run.
