Brethren Christian Solves Valley Christian in Softball

Jessica Echaves’ single with two outs in the top of the ninth drove in the winning run as Brethren Christian ended a 10-game losing streak against Cerritos Valley Christian with a 3-2 Olympic League victory Friday at Valley Christian.

The rally began when Melissa Cape reached base on an error with two outs, Natasha Saran singled to move Cape to second, and Cape and Saran pulled a double steal to set up the winning run for the Warriors (6-8, 1-2).

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 10, Newport Harbor 3--Fifth-ranked El Toro (16-5, 1-1) had a five-run third and a four-run fourth.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 16, Dana Hills 4--Kelsey Kollen and Shealee Dunavan each went four for five, and Monica Lucatero had three hits, including a home run, scored four runs and drove in four for fourth-ranked Mater Dei (14-3, 2-0).

San Clemente 6, Mission Viejo 4--Tara Frazier was three for three with an RBI for San Clemente (10-6, 2-0). Brie Ford was two for three with two triples, two RBIs and a run for Mission Viejo (8-8, 0-2).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Santa Margarita 101, Laguna Hills 69--Third-ranked Santa Margarita had little trouble with fifth-ranked Laguna Hills as the Eagles won nine of 11 events.

Philippe Demers’ winning 100 butterfly time (51.34) was the fastest in the county this season.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Laguna Hills 100, Santa Margarita 70--Morgan Class won the 100 freestyle (56.04) for Laguna Hills and freshman Shauna Barnard finished first in the 500 free (5:04.0). Laguna Hills is 7-2, 3-0.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Brea Olinda 14 1/2, Magnolia 6 1/2--Scott Koller swept his singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, to remain undefeated in league for Brea (7-8, 3-1). Mike Le also swept his singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, for the Wildcats.

In the South Coast League boys’ volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, San Clemente 1--Steve Almaguer had 20 kills and D.J. Van Sambeek had 10 blocks as Mater Dei upset ninth-ranked San Clemente, 15-17, 15-13, 15-3, 15-13.
