Matadors Drop Two to Arizona

After dropping the first game, 4-3, on a seventh-inning run, Cal State Northridge committed four errors and gave up nine runs in the second inning of the second game and lost, 16-6, in five innings to second-ranked Arizona in a nonconference softball doubleheader Saturday at Arizona.
Former Hoover High standout Nancy Evans (24-1) earned the victory in the first game after spotting the Matadors (26-16-2) two runs in the fourth inning. Evans gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked one.
The Wildcats (42-4) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth before Northridge’s Shelby Wilcox homered in the seventh to tie the score, 3-3.
Arizona scored the winning run off junior Cheri Shinn with none out when Leah O’Brien singled to drive in Katie Swan from second base.
Shortstop Ashlie Hayes committed three of the Matadors’ four second-inning errors in the second game. Shinn (9-8) took her second loss of the day.
