Orange Coast Rallies to Win in Volleyball

Orange Coast rallied to defeat Los Angeles Pierce in five games, 8-15, 15-17, 15-12, 15-13, 15-7, in the second round of the Southern California men’s volleyball playoffs Tuesday at Orange Coast.

Kevin Reid had 31 kills and Fernando Sabla added 20 for Orange Coast (19-2), which advanced to the state tournament semifinals. Orange Coast will play Long Beach and Golden West will play Sacramento American River Friday at Golden West.

Scott Sheridan had 21 kills for Pierce (16-4).

In the first round, Josh Richardson had 19 kills to help Orange Coast defeat Santa Barbara, 16-14, 16-14, 15-11.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Saddleback 20, Golden West 3--Saddleback (31-6, 14-6) scored 10 runs in the fourth and tied a school record for victories in a season.

Nick Punto had four hits and four runs, Kirk Bolling had three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs, and Corrie Willkie had three hits and four RBIs for the Gauchos (31-6, 14-6).

At the Orange Empire Conference track and field championships:

Watts wins javelin--Golden West’s Kim Watts won the javelin (113 feet 6 inches) and Fullerton’s Chris Modoc won the hammer throw (146-3). Christine Riel of Orange Coast won the 10,000 meters (40 minutes 51.28 seconds), seven seconds ahead of teammate Araceli Martinez.
