Notre Dame Players Came Dressed to Kill

Usually they perform in gymnasiums or on baseball fields.

But last Saturday, five athletes from Notre Dame High strutted their stuff at a different venue.

On a catwalk.

Volleyball players Paul Konzen, Jeff McDonald and Briana Hadfield, third baseman Sean Hanrahan and cheerleader Mindee Grimes were among 15 Notre Dame students who participated in a fashion show featuring the latest in formal wear.

The school prom, after all, is Saturday.

Notre Dame parents, teachers and students were among the 400 or so spectators at the Sheraton Universal.

“They were out there trying to get you to laugh or telling you to smile,” said Konzen, who felt the models were being treated like . . . models.

“They gave out lots of healthy food so we wouldn’t ruin our figure or anything. All I found was Diet Cokes.”

As for full-time modeling work, Konzen is leaving his options open.

“If somebody’s willing to come out and be my agent and show me the money, then we can start talking,” Konzen said.

Toon-up: He might be able to carry a tune but he definitely carries the Kennedy High boys’ volleyball team.

With 30 kills, 6-foot-5 middle blocker Jeff Toon helped the Golden Cougars (7-4, 4-4 in Northwest Valley Conference play) beat Taft last week.

During a recent loss to Chatsworth, Toon had 17 of Kennedy’s 19 kills.

“How he goes, we go,” Kennedy Coach Mike Stanton said. “He’s one of the best middle blockers in the area.”

Above average: Junior Jerrit Redlich of North Hollywood raised his average from .276 to .333 by going seven for 13 over a four-game stretch last week.

Third baseman Edgar Pineda of North Hollywood has returned to the lineup after missing 14 games because of tendinitis in his right shoulder.
