Northridge Plays Down to Utah State’s Level

First met last in Big West Conference softball Friday at Utah State and Cal State Northridge escaped with a doubleheader split after 42 hits and 25 runs.

The Matadors (34-18-2, 21-9 in conference play) rallied to win the opener, 7-6, but blew a lead and lost the second game, 7-5.

Chelo Lopez had a two-run double in the seventh inning of the first game to tie the score for Northridge, and scored on a double by Elizabeth Sanches.

Northridge blew a 4-1 lead in the second game when Utah State (17-34, 7-21) reached Cheri Shinn (12-9) for six runs in the fourth.

Cal Lutheran 1-9, Pomona-Pitzer 0-1--Donna Scott hit a run-scoring single for the Regals in the third inning of the first game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Thousand Oaks.

In the second game, Wendy Jackson drove in four runs for the Regals (25-8-1, 21-3).

BASEBALL

San Diego 4, Pepperdine 0--Brian Mazone (7-6) pitched a five-hitter for his third shutout, handing the Waves (28-23, 14-7) their sixth consecutive defeat in a West Coast Conference game at Malibu.

Randy Wolf (8-4) gave up a three-run homer to Jeb Dougherty during a four-run fifth inning.
