Cypress Infielder Case Signs With Kansas

Randy Case, a sophomore third baseman from Cypress College, has signed to attend Kansas, Coach Scott Pickler said Thursday.

Case, a switch-hitter from Villa Park High, hit .310 in 1997 and was selected as the co-most valuable player of the state tournament. He drove in 105 runs in two seasons at Cypress.

More than 200 Junior Olympic divers from throughout Southern California will compete today through Sunday at the Southern Pacific Assn. Summer Diving Championships at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex in Irvine. Events begin at 9 a.m. daily.

Garden Grove’s Wook Kim and Ocean View’s Trung Nguyen and Tien Le were selected to the Division I All-Star badminton team by the Southern California Badminton Assn., while Magnolia’s Joyce Cabuhat and Loara’s Sharon Myung, Melva Wong, Steve Lee and Tuan Nguyen were selected to the Division II All-Star team.

Cabuhat and Kim were selected division players of the year.

The Division II All-Stars will play Northern California’s All-Stars and the Division I All-Stars will meet San Diego’s All-Stars at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Orange County Badminton Club. Championship and third-place matches will begin 10 a.m. Sunday.

Julia Cappelli, a catcher at Esperanza, has signed to play softball at Towson State in Maryland. Cappelli was a four-year varsity player for the Aztecs.

Two Southern California College baseball players were named NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes. Matt Newton, a junior majoring in history and political science, has a 4.0 grade-point average. Rob Pegg, a senior science and mathematics major, has a 3.93 GPA.

New chair-type seating will be installed on the south side of Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym this month at a cost of about $185,000 as part of a continuing plan to upgrade the facility.

“It will give us some premium seating we have been needing for all types of events,” said Mike Uraine, university resource manager.

Uraine said plans call for similar seating to replace the bleachers on the north side next year if funding is available. Workers began removing the south bleachers this week.

The capacity will be reduced by approximately 400 to about 2,500. Work is expected to be completed by July 1.
