Falconer Faces Davis Again in Summer All-Star Game

Kevin Falconer, Calvary Chapel’s point guard, will get another chance to play across from Santa Monica Crossroads’ Baron Davis on June 29 in the IntenseCity Summer All-Star Classic at Ocean View High.

Falconer replaces Wes Bunn Jr. of Cypress on the Orange County all-star team. Both were Times’ all-county first-team selections.

Falconer, who is headed to Westmont College, led the Eagles to the Southern Section Division IV and Southern California Division IV finals, where they lost to Davis (UCLA) and Crossroads, twice.

Mater Dei’s Kevin Augustine (USC) and former Monarch Schea Cotton, who finished his prep career where it started, at Bellflower St. John Bosco, will participate in the slam dunk contest at halftime along with Davis and Compton’s Jeff Trepagnier (USC).

Davis won the slam dunk competition at the McDonald’s All-American Game in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Augustine and Trepagnier were co-winners of the slam dunk contest at April’s Eddie Jones Southern California All-Star game at the Pyramid. Among the judges are Miles Simon (Mater Dei/Arizona) and Laker Sean Rooks (Arizona).

The game starts at 7 p.m.

Ed Coyle has resigned as boys’ basketball coach at San Clemente High School.

Coyle, who led the Tritons to the playoffs in three of his four seasons, will become basketball coach at a new high school in Temecula.

The Woodbridge and Villa Park boys’ basketball teams will play their first games without their big men, Chris Burgess (Duke) and Eric Chenowith (Kansas), June 26-28 in the Converse South County Shootout at Trabuco Hills High.

Woodbridge, which defeated Villa Park in the Southern Section Division II-AA final, plays Sunny Hills at 1 p.m. in the auxiliary gym on June 26. At the same time, Villa Park meets Laguna Hills in the main gym.

Games, involving 24 teams in pool play, begin at 9 a.m. each day. The last games begin at 7:40 p.m. Admission is $3 per day for adults, $1 for children ages 10-13.

Paul Bottiaux, who has been a walk-on men’s basketball coach at Cypress College the last three seasons, has been hired full time, the college announced Monday.

Bottiaux worked eight seasons as an assistant at Cypress before taking over the program in 1994. He led Cypress to the playoffs all three seasons and has a record of 45-52.

Cypress went 15-16 last season but upset 10th-seeded Santa Monica, 108-104, in triple overtime in the first round.

Bottiaux was the head coach at Sonora High for 10 seasons before coming to Cypress.

Esperanza’s Leah Combs and Ocean View’s Anna Lembke lead a group of California All-Star players against the Chinese Women’s Junior Olympic women’s basketball team at 7 Thursday night at Alhambra Mark Keppel. The Chinese are training for the World Championships in Brazil in early July. At 3 p.m. Sunday, the Chinese will face the AAU Southern California women’s high school all-star team at Westminster High.
