Bradley Restricted to JV Basketball

Share

Jaline Bradley, a two-time Times’ All-Ventura County selection in girls’ basketball, will play at the junior varsity level at Channel Islands High because her transfer from Oxnard did not meet Southern Section requirements.

Bradley did not move with her sister, who was her legal guardian at the time, when she moved into her parents’ home in the Channel Islands attendance area last summer.

As a result, Bradley, who averaged 18.4 points in leading Oxnard to the 1996-97 Southern Section I-AA championship, will not be eligible to compete at the varsity level until her senior season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Big West honors: UC Santa Barbara center Nicole Greathouse, The Times’ Ventura County player of the year last season at Buena High, was named Big West Conference player of the week.

Greathouse had 26 points and 10 rebounds in an 88-86 upset of fifth-ranked Florida on Sunday. She is averaging 15 points and 7.2 rebounds and shooting a team-best 57.1% for the Gauchos (3-2).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Quick rematch: It wasn’t surprising that Pepperdine was selected to the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament, but the Waves’ first-round opponent, UCLA, is somewhat of a surprise.

Pepperdine lost in four games to the Bruins Saturday night at the University of Pacific tournament.

“Very rarely do we get a chance to play a Pac-10 team twice in a season,” Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthies said. “I’m looking for a little redemption.”

Pepperdine (23-5) plays the Bruins (16-12) Saturday at UC Santa Barbara. The winner faces Santa Barbara on Sunday.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Still alive: Despite a disappointing performance in its conference tournament, Pepperdine received an at-large berth to the four-team NCAA Championships this week in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The top-seeded Waves (23-3) will play UC Davis (15-18) at 4 p.m. Friday, with the winner advancing to the championship game Sunday against USC (20-6) or Queens College (25-5).

Pepperdine was 1-2 and finished fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament last weekend at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, losing to eventual champion USC, 10-9, and to California, 7-5.
