Long Beach’s May Is Big West Volleyball Player of Year

Long Beach State’s Misty May was named Big West Conference player of the year in women’s volleyball.

May, a junior setter from Newport Harbor High, was one of four 49ers to be named to the first team. Long Beach Coach Brian Gimmillaro was named coach of the year. The 49ers are the top-ranked team in the nation.

Cal State Fullerton’s Carolyn Kittell and LaCretia Smith and UC Irvine’s Larissa Carter (Fountain Valley High) were named to the second team. Carter and Kittell were selected to the all-freshman team.

Eric Wang of Saddleback College has signed to play golf at UC Irvine.

Wang attended Cypress High and was the Empire League’s most valuable player as a junior and senior.

Amy Knebel has committed to play volleyball at Rhode Island, Ocean View Coach Tim Mennealy said. Knebel helped the Seahawks win the school’s first Southern Section volleyball title two weeks ago.

Ocean View won the Southern California Division III final Tuesday to advance to Saturday’s state final at Cypress College.

The Huntington Beach surfing team defeated Edison, 81-66, Tuesday in a Sunset Surfing League match at Huntington City Beach. Sean Ward, Steve Spagnoli and Ryan Turner won their heats for the Oilers; Amanda Bartz, Jordan Schmidt, Tim Reyes and Peter Labrador won heats for the Chargers.
