Canyon Shuts Out No. 3 Santa Margarita in Soccer

Canyon goalkeeper Heather Williams had nine saves as the Comanches upset third-ranked Santa Margarita, 1-0, in a nonleague girls’ soccer Tuesday at Santa Margarita.

The shutout was the second of the season for Williams. Michelle Bannister scored the Comanches’ goal in the second half.

Santa Margarita, the defending Division II champions, dropped to 1-2.

In other nonleague girls’ soccer:

Costa Mesa 4, Calvary Chapel 1--Katie Roche scored three goals for Costa Mesa (3-1-1). Erin Van Horn had six saves for Costa Mesa.

No. 5 Edison 3, San Clemente 2--Heidi Prestegard scored twice in the second half to bring visiting Edison from behind and improve its record to 4-0.

No. 4 Esperanza 12, Lakewood 0--Freshman Stephanie Freeman scored her first varsity hat trick and two assists.

Katella 2, Santa Ana 2--Melanie Fults scored with five minutes left to tie the score for Santa Ana (2-1-1). Katella was leading, 2-0, when Sairia Montes scored in the 60th minute for Santa Ana.

Laguna Hills 1, Corona del Mar 1--Freshman forward Jaycee Mahler scored an unassisted goal late in the second half to earn a tie for Corona del Mar (1-1-3), its third 1-1 tie of the season.

No. 7 Los Alamitos 1, Long Beach Poly 0--Nikki Jones scored in the eighth minute and Jenny Willemse made eight saves in the shutout for Los Alamitos (2-0-1).

No. 8 Mater Dei 5, Fountain Valley 3--Tracey Winzen scored three goals and Erinn Goletz had the other two for Mater Dei (3-0-1).

Sonora 4, Rosary 1--Harmony McDaniel, Tina Fodor and Riannon Griego scored in the first half to give Sonora (2-0) a three-goal lead.

In the El Rancho boys’ soccer tournament:

Calvary Chapel 4, L.A. Salesian 0--Andrew Hong scored two goals in a consolation victory for Calvary Chapel. Goalie Jon Linzey had two saves in his second shutout of the season.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Garden Grove 3, Tustin 2--David Pines and Kenny Brooks scored for the Argonauts (1-1) in the second half to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Goalkeeper Randy Ramirez made 15 saves in the game, six on breakaways. Louis Lopez and Philip Cardenas scored first-half goals for the host Tillers (1-1).

Servite 6, Brethren Christian 0--Keith Buckley scored three goals and Mark Kisting added two for Servite (3-0). Ryan Terracino made 18 saves for visiting Brethren Christian (0-4).

Valencia 4, Canyon 2--Mark Fiamengo scored two second-half goals for Valencia (1-1), which trailed, 1-0, at halftime. Carlos Rosas scored the tying goal and had an assist on the final goal for the Tigers.

In nonleague wrestling:

No. 2 Santa Ana 47, Magnolia 25--Vince Aldana (103), Tony Perez (112) and Jose Leon (125) won by pins.
