Roach’s Goal With 30 Seconds Left Lifts Cougars

Justin Roach scored the winner in the last 30 seconds of the game to give No. 4 Capistrano Valley a 2-1 victory over Redondo Beach Redondo Union and advance the Cougars to the finals of the South Torrance boys’ soccer tournament Tuesday.

Phil Latini scored the other goal for Capistrano Valley (8-1-1), which plays Santa Ana Valley for the title at noon today at South Torrance High.

In a quarterfinal game, the Cougars came back in the second half to score two goals to take the lead for the win. Josh Phalen and Latini scored the two goals for Capistrano Valley.

In the other semifinal:

Santa Ana Valley 4, Simi Valley 2--Fernando Rico scored his seventh and eighth goal of the season to advance Santa Ana Valley (7-1-1) to the finals. Erik Sanchez and Miguel Leal capped the Falcons’ scoring with one each. Backup goalkeeper Marlon Najarro recorded seven saves. Santa Ana edged Los Alamitos, 2-1, in a quarterfinal game. Rico scored the winner on a penalty kick with no time remaining in overtime. Najarro had five saves.

In the Magnolia boys’ soccer tournament:

Kennedy 2, Garden Grove 0--Jessie Harms and Randy Dawson scored Kennedy’s first-half goals in the third-place game.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 4, No. 8 Santa Margarita 1--Capistrano Valley (8-0) built a 4-0 lead behind goals from Evelyn Miles, Nichole Palo, Ashley Casas and Elizabeth Hastings.

Santa Margarita falls to 3-3-1.

No. 3 Esperanza 3, No. 2 Mission Viejo 2--Esperanza’s first goal came when Stephanie Freeman scored five minutes into the game after an assist by Erin Winter. Kate Desmond tied the score at the 27th minute for Mission Viejo but Shannon Moore scored the first of her two goals to give Esperanza the lead and eventual win. Moore scored her second in the second half.

In the Lakewood Artesia-Brethren Christian basketball tournament:

No. 5 Marina 60, Huntington Beach 30--Reserve Nadia Mojica had a career-high 14 rebounds as Marina (9-2) gained a 51-33 rebounding edge. The Vikings put the game away early, outscoring Huntington Beach, 18-0, over a nine-minute span in the first half.

Culver City 55, Cypress 44--Lisa Choi scored 10 points in the consolation-round loss for Cypress (5-4). Culver City’s Regan Santos led all scorers with 21 points.

Lakewood St. Joseph 42, Kennedy 27--With almost the entire fourth quarter left to play, St. Joseph was awarded the game after Kennedy Coach Manny Anaya refused to leave the building after being ejected from the game. Cira Wright had 10 points to lead Kennedy (8-2). Brandi Tolliver had 13 for St. Joseph (8-3).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

No. 9 Edison 62, No. 8 Rosary 52--Edison made 12 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter, including eight of 12 by Melaine Cherney, to defeat Rosary.

In the El Toro Christmas wrestling tournament:

No. 3 Fountain Valley takes second--Crowning three individual champions, the Barons edged Apple Valley by six points with 157 1/2 points. Poway, ranked sixth in the state, ran away with the team title with 267 1/2 points.

Phil Hunt earned the Barons’ first individual title in the 145-pound weight class. Matt Oden followed at 152 pounds and heavyweight Brian Sanfilipio capped the championship final.

Newport Harbor, which finished 10th, had two champions in the 35-team tournament. Brian Lim defeated Noom Sirimaturas of West Covina to win at 112 pounds and Sailor teammate Rigo Pinon won his 130 pound match. El Toro’s Josh Jarrett was a champion at 160 pounds.

Olivia O’Campo (103 pounds) of Oxnard Channel Islands, defeated Diego Serrato of Los Amigos to become the tournament’s first female finalist. She took third.
