Westlake Village’s Wire Loses in Men’s National Semifinals

Tom Wire of Westlake Village lost in the semifinals of the United States Tennis Assn. National 45 Men’s Hardcourt Championships at Westlake Tennis & Swim Club on Saturday.

Wire was defeated by Jim Rombeau of Houston, 6-1, 6-2. Rombeau will face second-seeded Peter Bronson of Scottsdale, Ariz., in the final today at 11 a.m.

After his singles match, Bronson will team with Gene Malin of Woodland Hills in the doubles championship. Second-seeded Malin and Bronson defeated Steve and Ron Cornell of Oakland, 7-6, 6-3, and will meet top-seeded Dan and Dave Bohannon.

Roberto Rodriguez of Sherman Oaks defeated Charles Hoeveler of Ross, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the finals of a wild-card tournament for the Infiniti Open. Rodriguez plays Otis Smith of Los Angeles at 11 a.m. today at the Racquet Centre in Studio City, with the winner advancing to the Infiniti Open qualifying tournament.

Santa Clarita United is holding tryouts for its under-19 boys’ club soccer team Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at Valencia Glen Park in Santa Clarita.

Sign-ups are being taken for two youth volleyball camps in Saugus.

A novice camp for youngsters in fifth through eighth grades as of September is scheduled for July 21-25 at Saugus High.

The Simi Valley Soccer Club’s under-15 girls’ team is seeking field players and a goalkeeper for its upcoming season in the El Camino Real Soccer League and selected tournaments.

Players must have been born after July 31, 1982, and be residents of the Santa Clarita, San Fernando Valley or Ventura County areas.
