The tale of two disqualified Little Leaguers, already rife with accusations and denials, grew more tangled on Tuesday.

Junior Garcia and Garrett Feig, both 12, were declared ineligible last week by Little League officials on grounds that they live outside the boundaries for the Woodland Hills Sunrise Little League.

Junior joined the league after his father moved from the family’s Van Nuys home to a Canoga Park apartment within the league area. Amid claims that the apartment was a front, Little League officials found insufficient evidence to prove Garcia’s residency.

Now, Garrett Feig’s mother has confirmed that she co-signed the lease on the apartment in question.

But Kathleen Feig denied that she participated in an alleged effort to recruit Junior, who is regarded as one of the top young players in the Valley.

“If it had been anything shady, do you think I would have had my name on that lease?” Feig asked. “I’m not dumb.”

Feig’s son was disqualified on similar grounds of using a false address.

“People are going to think whatever they want to think,” she said. “But I don’t know why these two kids are going through this.”

Despite appeals, the two players have watched from the stands at sectional games in Lompoc.

Garcia and Feig met while playing on a club team coached by Garrett’s father, Michael. Kathleen Feig said she became friendly with the Garcia family.

Last January, Juan Garcia told her that he was separating from his wife, Feig said.

“He’d been looking for places to live but he was having a problem because they wanted a co-signer,” she said. “I spoke up and said I didn’t mind co-signing.

“I know it looks absurd now, but back then I was helping a friend,” she said.

When asked to supply proof of residency, Garcia and Woodland Hills administrators submitted a confusing mix of checks and receipts for mismatched amounts.

Though named on the lease, Feig said that she was not paying any part of the $645 monthly rent.

“I haven’t paid one cent for Juan Garcia’s apartment, nor would I,” she said.
