Matt Komer of Los Alamitos has made an oral commitment to play volleyball at UCLA, according to Surf City volleyball club Coach Steve Walker.

The 6-foot-6-inch senior was named to the All-Sunset League first team as a junior after leading the Griffins in kills and aces. He was named to the second team as a sophomore.

The surf team from Huntington Beach High defeated Edison, 84-63, Tuesday in a Sunset Surfing League match at Huntington City Beach.

Vinnie Delatorre, Micah Byrne and Ryan Turner (longboard) won their heats for Huntington Beach. Emily Nehrig (girls), Brad McEvay and E.J. Collins won heats for Edison.

Chris Berry, a former Esperanza golfer, helped Nevada Las Vegas to the title in the Rolex National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships Monday at Doral Resort & Spa in Miami.

The Rebels beat Clemson in three of five matches in the final. Berry defeated Lucas Glover of Clemson, 1 up.

In the women’s final, Arizona beat Duke in a tiebreaker. Duke’s Alicia Allison, a former Foothill High standout, lost her match, 2 and 1, to Krissie Register.

The Unsyncables, a masters synchronized swimming club team from Southern California, took top honors recently in national competition at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.

The Unsyncables scored 130 points to become only the second team from the west to win the 32-club competition. Santa Clara won in 1983.

Gold medals were awarded to county residents Molly Baross (Santa Ana) and Andrea Swanson (Irvine) in the 50-59 age-group grandmaster trio event; Baross in the 40-49 grandmaster team event, and Becky Rudolph (Irvine) in the 50-59 master team event.

Rudolph also won a silver medal in the 40-45 master solo event, and Jill Clarke (Huntington Beach) won a bronze medal in the 50-59 master trio event.
