CSUN Sports Clinics Set for Girl Scouts

Valley Girl Scouts will receive a crash course in sports Friday and Saturday as participants in a program highlighting women in sports at Cal State Northridge.

About 200 Scouts of junior high school age are expected Friday at the kickoff of the two-day sports program.

Following the CSUN versus Texas-Arlington women’s basketball game Friday evening, the Scouts will attend sports clinics conducted by the CSUN women’s soccer, tennis and softball teams.

“The objective for the clinics is to present the Scouts with a positive, enjoyable and interactive experience with the student athletes,” said Jason E. Katz, development and communications director of the San Fernando Valley Girl Scout Council. “This program is geared specifically to girls interested in collegiate sports . . . to let them meet and experience other women that have been successful in sports.”

In the past, camping and cooking were mainstays of Girl Scout activities. But Katz said learning about team sports goes a long way toward changing people’s perceptions while emphasizing the changes in Girl Scout activities in recent years.

Activities will include a nighttime swim in the university’s pool and a camp-out at the university.

The program is open to all Valley Girl Scouts. For details, call the Valley Girl Scout Council at (818) 886-1801.
