Golden West Wins Pair of State Water Polo Titles

Golden West dominated the state water polo championships with convincing victories in the men’s and women’s finals Saturday at Ohlone College.

The Rustler men’s team capped a perfect season by defeating West Valley, 14-5, winning its ninth consecutive title.

Golden West (37-0) was sparked offensively by Boss Veer, who scored a game-high three goals. West Valley was unable to overcome a 5-1 deficit at the end of the first quarter and never threatened.

The top-ranked Golden West women’s team defeated No. 2 Orange Coast, 12-6, after trailing, 3-2, at the half. Two-meter player Nadine Akers led all scorers with nine goals for the Rustlers (36-1). Orange Coast finished 24-8-1.

In the Saddleback men’s basketball tournament:

Saddleback 73, Palomar 63--Kenzie Weir scored 17 points and had five rebounds for Saddleback (2-0). Palomar’s Jeremy Killion scored a game-high 23 points.

In the Victor Valley men’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 79, Glendale 60--A.D. Lamoureux had 25 points and 15 rebounds in a semifinal victory for Cypress (2-0). Teammate Frankie Floyd scored 15 points.

The Chargers play Riverside at 4 p.m. today in the championship.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Cerritos 84, Santa Ana 60--Tony Harvey scored 28 points and Jason Nicholas 10 points for Cerritos (2-0).

Lohnnie Tape scored 13 points and Mark Saukkola 10 for the Dons (0-2).

In the Mt. San Antonio women’s basketball tournament:

San Bernardino Valley 77, Fullerton 64--Fullerton forward Aimee Copp scored 17 points for the Hornets (1-1).

In the Santa Barbara women’s tournament:

Irvine Valley 77, Santa Barbara 39--Heather Cunningham had 21 points and was named most valuable player and Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham had 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team after the Lazers won the championship.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Canyons 102, Golden West 25--Shauna Steward had 10 points for Golden West (0-2), which trailed, 57-19, at the half.
