Curt Rodriguez, a right-handed pitcher at Capistrano Valley, has committed to play baseball at Brigham Young, Cougar Coach Bob Zamora announced Monday.

Last season Rodriguez had a 2.34 earned-run average and struck out 63 in 53 2/3 innings.

Santa Margarita center Dekker McKeever has signed to play basketball at Holy Cross, his mother, Terry, said. The 6-7 senior averaged eight points last season.

Erin Kelly of Brea Olinda signed a letter to play basketball at New Orleans, Brea Coach Jeff Sink announced. Kelly, a 5-10 guard, averaged 9.9 points, 5.5 steals and shot 48% from the three-point line for the Ladycats last season.

Juan Manuel Fangio II, nephew of five-time Formula I World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio, stunned Dan Gurney over the weekend by retiring from Gurney’s CART team after a test session.

It ends a 12-year relationship between Fangio, 41, and Santa Ana-based All-American Racers.

Fangio was named the 1992 driver of the year by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Assn.

Bruce Penhall of Laguna Hills and Dennis Sigalos of Newport Beach won the APBA World Offshore Championship over the weekend in Biloxi, Miss.

It is their third title in four years. They won in the Super Vee class after a season in which they took third in the recently completed APBA National Championship Series.

A 13-and-under boys’ team from Orange Regional Competitive Aquatics took second place Sunday at the North American Speedo Cup water polo championships in St. Louis.

ORCA advanced to the semifinals, beating TRAP, a team from South Orange County, 5-4, in double overtime.

San Diego Shores defeated ORCA, 4-3, Sunday in the championship game. ORCA is made up of players from Orange, Villa Park, Anaheim Hills and Yorba Linda.

In the three-day tournament, ORCA opened with a 7-6 victory over Annapolis (Md.) Navy. In the next games, it beat a team from Puerto Rico, 9-7, and Marin, a Northern California team, 6-5.
