Akers, from Los Alamitos High, spent much of the season in the shadow of teammate Lisa Saenz, who set the state single-season scoring record. But in the state championship game Saturday, it was Akers who stepped forward. She had nine goals as the Rustlers beat Orange Coast, 12-6. It was the third time Golden West (36-0) beat the Pirates this season. Akers scored six goals in the first two games of the tournament for Golden West.
