Crescenta Valley, La Canada in Final

Second-seeded La Canada High advanced to the Southern Section Division III semifinals for the first time since 1980 with a 9-6 quarterfinal victory Tuesday over Whittier at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.

The Spartans (24-5) will face cross-town rival Crescenta Valley in Saturday’s semifinal at Caltech at a time to be determined.

Brian Ahn had a career-high five goals and Dutch Turley added three for the Spartans. Leading scorer Brendan Naeve did not score a goal for the first time this season.

Goalie Russell Bernstein had nine saves for La Canada, which won a Southern Section title in 1979 and was runner-up in 1980.

Crescenta Valley 17, El Segundo 5--All-Southern Section goalie Brian Hasbrouck had 19 saves to spark a strong defensive effort for the Falcons (21-3) in a Division III quarterfinal rout at Mira Costa High.

Hasbrouck, who came out of the game midway through the fourth quarter, allowed one goal in the first, second and fourth quarters.

Justin Payne and Kenny Carpenter each scored twice in the third quarter for the Falcons, who turned a 6-2 halftime lead into a 12-4 lead after three quarters. Payne finished with six goals and Carpenter had four.

Crescenta Valley, seeded third, advances to the semifinals for the first time since 1994, when it lost to Mira Costa. Crescenta Valley and La Canada have not played this season.
