Desatoff Helps Put Cypress Into State Tournament

Vedda Desatoff scored on a header in the 71st minute as Cypress earned a berth in the state tournament by beating Ventura, 1-0, in a Southern California women’s soccer playoff game Friday at Cal State Fullerton.

It was the second playoff goal for Desatoff, who scored off Cami Askey’s corner kick.

Desatoff, the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, scored when Cypress beat Santa Barbara, 1-0, in the first round Tuesday.

Kari Bates had nine saves, eight in the first half, for Cypress (20-1-3), which has 15 consecutive shutouts.

Cypress’ only loss this season was to Ventura in the first week of the season. Cypress won, 3-0, in a later meeting.

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Los Angeles Valley 82, Saddleback 79--Marshall Freeman scored 21 points and Vernon Jackson had 20 points and four steals for Saddleback (4-1), which trailed by 13 points at halftime. Leon Brisport scored 19 points to lead Los Angeles Valley in the semifinal game.

In the Porterville tournament:

Fresno 68, Cypress 63--Frank Floyd scored 24 points in a first-round loss for Cypress. A.D. Lamoureux scored 16 points for the Chargers (2-2).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Orange Coast 0--Mariah Marquis had 13 kills for Golden West in its 15-2, 15-10, 15-13 victory over Orange Coast (15-6, 10-4). Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, finished the regular season at 21-1, 13-1.

Saddleback 3, Irvine Valley 0--Whitney Uhl had 20 kills and Andreea Iliescu had 13 in three games a 15-6, 15-7, 15-8 victory for Saddleback (18-3, 13-1), which finished conference play as co-champions with Golden West.
