Give Ragland Another Assist

In his first year at Campbell Hall High, girls’ volleyball Coach Chris McGee has found an unusual assistant in Tanner Ragland.
Ragland, a junior, is a setter on the boys’ volleyball team.
“He’s very organized,” McGee said. “He does all sorts of stuff--stats, ball-tossing and he gives feedback too. He’s kind of becoming my right-hand guy.”
It seems to be working. The Vikings are ranked third in Southern Section Division V-AA.
CROSS-COUNTRY
The Quartz Hill High girls’ team was expected to have a strong 1-2 punch in senior Danielle Day and junior Carly Harrill, but the addition of freshman Shell Blevins has made the Rebels triple tough.
The trio placed first, second and fourth in the Division II race of the Fountain Valley Invitational on Saturday to mark the fourth time in five meets they’ve finished among the top five.
A 1-2-3 finish by Day, Harrill and Blevins in the Kenny Staub Invitational on Oct. 4 was preceded by a 1-4-5 finish in the large schools race of the Ojai Invitational and a 1-3-4 finish by Day, Blevins and Harrill in the first Golden League meet.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Matches this week will determine the favorites in the Foothill and Marmonte Leagues.
In the Foothill, Hart will try to upend three-time defending league champion Burroughs today. Hart (9-0, 4-0) has weathered the loss of singles standout Jieun Jacobs behind freshman Jenny Munroe. Despite an elbow injury that forces her to serve underhanded, Munroe has lost only one set this season. Burroughs (7-3, 4-0) is led by Shaland Romero.
Camarillo (9-1, 6-0) can cement its hold on first place in the Marmonte with a victory over Simi Valley (10-1, 5-1) on Thursday at Camarillo. The Pioneers lost to Camarillo, 10-8, in a league opener last month.
