Ventura Wins Three With an Empty Net

Ventura College did not allow a goal in three games of the Cuesta Cup women’s soccer tournament Saturday at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and advanced to today’s semifinals.

Goalies Nicole Strakey and Kristen Rupp combined for a 6-0 victory over Canada College in the tournament opener.

Strakey had fives saves in a 1-0 victory over Santa Rosa in the second game of round-robin play and Rupp defeated Citrus, 8-0.

Joy Barry had three goals and three assists in the three games for the Pirates, who got goals from nine players.

Ventura plays Long Beach City College at 10:30 a.m. in the semifinals.

MEN’S SOCCER

Fresno Pacific 1, The Master’s 0--Juan Carlos Baviche scored in the 51st minute from 30 yards for Fresno Pacific (3-0) on a shot that hit in front of goalie Kris Bage and bounced over his head in a nonconference match at Newhall.

Bage had 10 saves for the Mustangs (0-3), while Saul Torres turned away eight shots for Fresno Pacific.

Stanford 4, CS Northridge 0--A.J. Sauer scored twice for the Cardinal in the Nevada Las Vegas tournament Friday night.

The Matadors (0-2) were outshot, 16-5.

Grand Canyon 3, Cal Lutheran 2--The visiting Kingsmen (0-1) blew a 1-0 halftime lead in their season opener when Milos Tomic scored twice and B.K. Grayson scored on goalkeeper Guillermo Alvarado, who had five saves in the nonconference match. Oskar Kantoft and Sebastian Alvarado scored for Cal Lutheran.

WATER POLO

Valley 11, Long Beach 9--Mike Scarcelli, Jon Conrad and three other Monarchs scored two goals and Mike Driscoll made 11 saves in the fifth-place game of the season-opening Ventura tournament.

Driscoll made 12 saves in a 7-6 semifinal victory over Mt. San Antonio.

Scarcelli finished the four-game tournament with 15 goals, Conrad scored 11 and Driscoll had 36 saves for the Monarchs (3-1).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. Idaho State, 15-10, 17-15, 15-12--Anna Witkowski had 16 kills and eight blocks for the Waves (6-0) in the New Mexico Tournament.

Becci Boehi had 54 assists and 19 digs for Pepperdine, and Nicole Sanderson had 13 kills and 13 digs. Lisa Stark had 14 digs and seven blocks for the Waves.

Eastern Washington d. Cal State Northridge, 12-15, 5-15, 15-13, 15-11, 15-6--The Matadors (6-1) were defeated in five games in the Nevada-Las Vegas Volleyball Classic tournament in Las Vegas.

Nancy Ma had 20 kills and 17 digs to pace the Matadors. Kristin Sigel and Crystal Newquist each added 15 kills.
