OUTLOOK

The Seahawks find themselves long on running backs, but short of other important things, such as a place to practice on campus. The Huntington Beach Union High School District leased the school’s former athletic field site at the corner of Golden West Street and Warner Avenue to Home Depot. Earlier this summer crews removed goal posts and earthmovers have feverishly been leveling the ground to put up a shopping center. The Seahawks have been relegated to what’s left of the baseball field. Meanwhile, Vander Sluis has yet another young team at a school that has struggled to attract football players. Ocean View is 5-15 over the last two seasons. Armendariz is the real thing, though. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season, gaining 639 yards in an offense that struggled to put points on the scoreboard. Like most coaches in the league, Vander Sluis sees Servite and Tustin as the teams to beat. He is blunt in his assessment of his team’s chances, picking the Seahawks to outduel Santa Ana to stay out of the cellar. Gone is quarterback Jeff Taylor, who threw for 1,127 yards and 10 touchdowns. But if McMahan can step into the starting quarterback role he has experience in the receiving corps with Hatch and Seward.
