Westlake Does Homework, Wins Volleyball Tournament
The season is early, but the Westlake High girls’ volleyball team has already collected its first award.
The Warriors defeated San Marcos, 15-3, 15-2, on Saturday night to win the Westlake tournament.
Westlake setter Brooke Rundle was named most valuable player of the tournament.
Westlake’s Courtney Miller, Heatcher Hutchison and Megan Mullen were named to the all-tournament team, as was Elena Salvador of Thousand Oaks.
Thousand Oaks defeated Royal in the fourth-place match, 11-15, 15-9, 15-10.
The Warriors, ranked No. 2 in the state Division II poll, swept Thousand Oaks in the semifinals.
In the other semifinal, San Marcos beat Royal, 13-15, 17-15, 12-15, after sweeping Glendale, Thousand Oaks and Chaminade in pool play.
Sherisa Livingston had 13 kills and three blocks for the Highlanders and Courtney Guerra added 16 kills against San Marcos.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
La Reina Invitational--Thomas Kubler of Viewpoint clocked 15:52 over the 2.75-mile course and finished 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Jeff Largent of Village Christian at La Reina High.
Village Christian won the team title with 29 points, five better than Viewpoint.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
La Reina Invitational--The Regents had three of the top five finishers to take the team title. The Regents had 27 points to runner-up Viewpoint’s 30.
Lauren Phillips of Viewpoint won the race, touring the 2.75-mile course in 15 minutes 52 seconds.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Valencia tournament--Margo O’Donnell and Rebecca Hunau of Simi Valley defeated top-seeded Casey Chapenian and Kelly Powell of Fresno Clovis West, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, to win the doubles title.
