No. 8 Servite (0-1) vs. Irvine (1-0)
7:30 P.M. FRIDAY
IRVINE HIGH
It’s unlikely Irvine will be able to rally for a victory this week if it falls way behind, as it did in its 30-29 victory over crosstown rival University. The Vaqueros trailed, 21-2, then caught fire in the third quarter behind a 212-yard rushing performance by running back Al Williams. Servite has one of the county’s better bend-but-don’t-break defensive teams. The Friars gave up 198 total yards in last week’s 7-6 loss to Esperanza. Look for Coach Larry Toner to attempt to kick-start the Servite offense by turning to the no-huddle offense again, perhaps as early as the team’s opening drive.
