Galaxy update--Having clinched a place in the Major League Soccer playoffs for the second consecutive year, the Galaxy’s new goal is to try to finish second in the Western Conference and thereby secure the home-field advantage. To do that, Los Angeles has to win its remaining games--today and against the conference-champion Kansas City Wizards at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 28--while hoping the Dallas Burn loses or fails to win its final match in regulation. Either way, since the second-place team plays the third-place finisher in the first round, the Galaxy and Burn are likely to face each other in the playoffs. Los Angeles defeated Dallas twice last week.

Clash update--The Clash has to win both of its final matches to have any chance of making the playoffs. San Jose trails the Colorado Rapids by five points. The Rapids play the Wizards in Kansas City on Friday night and close the season against the Clash at San Jose on Sept. 28.
