Simi Valley Takes Two for Title

Cindy Gray singled up the middle to score Jill Clarkson in the top of the 11th inning to give Simi Valley High a 1-0 victory over Chaminade in the championship game of the Righetti softball tournament at Santa Maria.

Gray had two hits and Brittney Green (6-1) threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Pioneers (13-2).

Green, who had three victories in the tournament, was named the most valuable player.

In a semifinal game, Simi Valley defeated the state’s top-ranked team, Tustin Foothill, 3-2, on Gray’s sacrifice fly in the eighth.

In another softball game:

Cleveland 13, Birmingham 4--Monique Abourched had four hits and two RBIs for the Cavaliers (8-0, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

BASEBALL

Agoura 9, Westlake 4--Brian Jacobsen extended his streak for reaching base to 13 at-bats with two home runs and the Chargers won a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Jacobsen’s streak came to an end when he grounded out in the fifth inning. He had eight singles, a double, two home runs and two walks in the streak.

Jacobsen pitched three scoreless innings to record his fourth save.

Agoura (11-5-1, 2-2-1 overall) took a 4-0 lead on consecutive home runs by Michael Falco, Jacobsen and Ryan McCann in the first inning.

Oak Park 6, Workman 2--David Wurth had three hits and five runs batted in, and Jeff Roberts pitched a three-hitter for the Eagles (6-6) in the B Bracket championship game of the Rowland tournament.

Damien 14, Simi Valley 12--The Pioneers took a 6-0 lead after one inning, but lost in the Chino tournament in a game halted after six innings by a time limit.

Brandon Voorhees had four hits, including two home runs, and four RBIs for Simi Valley (7-5).

El Camino Real 8, San Fernando 5--Connor Jackson had two hits and five RBIs, and the Conquistadores (8-6, 6-1) won a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Grant 7, Reseda 6--Dennis Moran’s run-scoring single with two out in the eighth gave the Lancers a Valley Pac-8 victory at Reseda.

The Lancers (5-11, 4-4) got even with three runs in the seventh.

Leo Rosales went four for four with two doubles and a home run for Reseda.

North Hollywood 10, Monroe 3--Ismael Rangsiyawong, who had three hits and three RBIs, hit a two-run home run and Jose Avila drove in four runs for North Hollywood (10-7, 6-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood.

Palmdale 10, Lancaster 5--Chris Testa hit two triples and scored three runs for the Falcons in a Golden League victory at Palmdale.

Jason Gorman (4-0) and Sean Zortman combined on a four-hitter for Palmdale (11-4, 6-0).

Lancaster is 10-5, 2-3.

Sylmar 7, Van Nuys 2--The Spartans scored four unearned runs on three errors during a five-run third inning in a Valley Pac-8 victory at Sylmar.

Mario Pacheco (5-1) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out five over six innings for Sylmar (13-3, 7-0).

Chaminade 11, Fremont 6--Chris Martinez hit a three-run home run to give the Eagles (8-8-1) a 7-0 lead in a 10-run second inning in the Fremont tournament in San Jose.

Antelope Valley 8, Quartz Hill 3--Hector Velez pitched a five-hitter, allowing no earned runs while striking out two for the Antelopes (5-9, 2-2) in a Golden League victory at Antelope Valley.

Johnny Smith had two hits, including a run-scoring triple for the Rebels (10-5, 3-3).

Notre Dame 5, Beverly Hills 4--Chris Morell’s tie-breaking single in the seventh gave the Knights third place in the Atascadero-Paso Robles tournament at Atascadero High.

Crespi 10, La Mirada 9--Andy Campanella singled home the winning run in the seventh inning and the Celts (14-3-1) won the St. Paul tournament. Campanella, the tournament’s most valuable player, drove in two other runs with a ground ball and a walk.
