Rio Mesa Gets Good Start and Finishes Monroe, 7-2

Freshman Lionel Carrizales (1-0), making his first varsity start, scattered five hits over four innings and struck out five to help Rio Mesa High defeat Monroe, 7-2, on Saturday in the Redondo Union baseball tournament at Rio Mesa.

John Ramirez had three hits, including a two-run home run, Greg Ramirez had two hits and drove in two runs, and Paul Ayala added a double, a single and scored two runs for Rio Mesa (13-4).

Adam Kaplan and Vince Vargas each had two hits for Monroe (7-10-1).

Crespi 11-0, St. Bernard 1-1--Ron Lauer hit a grand slam, Luke Worgan added a home run and Mike Jackson and Marshall Plouffe (3-1) combined to pitch a two-hitter for the Celts (15-4-1) in the first game of a doubleheader at St. Bernard. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Kris Hodgins (0-2) and Worgan combined for a four-hitter in the second game, but John Oboelkerim of St. Bernard hit a leadoff home run off Hodgins in the fourth.

El Segundo 5, Hueneme 1--Francisco Camarena hit a run-scoring double but the Vikings (11-6) lost the fifth-place game at the San Luis Obispo tournament.

Rigo Garcia of Hueneme, who was five for seven in the tournament, was named to the all-tournament team.

Thacher 12, Laguna Blanca 0--Brandon Bhaskar and Bo Eison each had two hits for the Toads (3-1, 2-0) in a Condor League game at Laguna Blanca that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Viewpoint 12, Providence 8--Nick McKay had a two-run double and three RBIs for the Patriots in a Liberty League victory at Viewpoint.

Chaney Sheffield had three RBIs and three stolen bases for Viewpoint (9-4, 6-0), which has won its 41 consecutive league games.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 5-5, Harvard-Westlake 0-1--Freshman Kristi Bentley yielded a leadoff home run to Lisa Feigenbaum in the first inning of the second game, then limited the Wolverines (9-8) to two hits the rest of the way at Moorpark.

Cori Fredette was four for six with two RBIs in the doubleheader for Moorpark.

Erin Heinbechner (6-2) struck out six for the Musketeers in the first game.

Rio Mesa 2-2, Fillmore 0-1--Kiara Cochran’s two-out, RBI triple in the seventh gave the Spartans (10-2) a sweep at Rio Mesa.

Monique Barretto (5-0) pitched a four-hitter in the second game, striking out seven.

Marcella Ramirez (5-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five for the Spartans in the first game.

Rhianna Rogers had two hits, including a triple, and scored a run for Rio Mesa in the opener.

Cornerstone Christian 20, Laguna Blanca 0--Julia Tamai had four hits and six RBIs for the Eagles in the first of two Condor League games at Cornerstone Christian.

Julie Hartnell and Kari Becker combined on a no-hitter in the game that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Cornerstone Christian 15, Cate 0--Tiffany Monzo had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles in a Condor League game at Cornerstone Christian that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Rene Prebble hit a three-run triple for Cornerstone Christian (8-3, 4-0).

Crescenta Valley 1, Cerritos 0--Laura Schmalen scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning at the Woodbridge tournament.

Crescenta Valley 1, La Habra 0--Melinda Moulden hit her third home run, one of only two hits for the Falcons (14-4).
