Doris P. Mitchell; Kindergarten Teacher

Longtime Ventura resident Doris P. Mitchell died Friday. She was 82.

Born July 11, 1915, in the small town of Vesta, Minn., Mitchell was the daughter of a country doctor.

She attended college at Drake University, graduated from Miss Woods Teachers College in Minnesota and returned to Vesta. In December 1945, she met and married Walter Mitchell, and the pair moved west to Monterey Park, where she taught kindergarten.

The couple moved to Ventura in 1961 with their sons Jim and Rick. Mitchell taught kindergarten in Ventura for 18 more years, retiring in 1979.

During her years in Ventura she became involved in the Community Presbyterian Church, and after her retirement, Mitchell also became a volunteer at Community Memorial Hospital. She also participated with the Assumption Church exercise group and spent time almost daily with her children and grandchildren.

Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband in 1993. She is survived by sons Jim and Rick Mitchell, three grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Loma Vista School Library Memorial fund in the name of Doris P. Mitchell.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home.
