El Modena Rallies to Beat Foothill in Softball

El Modena, ranked 10th in the county, came back from a three-run deficit to defeat No. 2 Foothill, 6-3, in Century League softball Wednesday at El Modena.

Foothill (18-5, 4-1) scored three unearned runs in the third, but El Modena came back with five runs on five hits in the fifth to take the lead.

Morgan Scott had three hits and scored a run for El Modena (17-3-1, 5-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 24, Anaheim 0 (5, mercy rule)--Geney Orris hit her 29th career home run, a grand slam, to set a Southern Section record. Orris surpassed Glendora St. Lucy’s Jenny Dalton (1992).

In the Pacific Coast League golf championships:

Won wins--University’s Ron Won shot a two-day total of 146 to win the title. Brian Finay shot a one-under-par 71 on the second day to finish second at 147. Estancia’s Dan St. Laurent aced the 137-yard 16th hole.

In Century League boys’ swimming:

No. 5 Foothill 87 1/2, No. 6 Villa Park 82 1/2--Foothill came back to win the last three events to edge Villa Park and win the league title. Senior James Thornton won the 200 (1:46.62) and the 500 (4:50.94) freestyle events for the Knights (5-0). Villa Park’s Nick Pacelli, Chris Green, Mike Casagrande and Kyle Baumgarner won the 200 freestyle relay in a county-best time of 1 minute 29.52 seconds. Villa Park ends the league season at 4-1.

In Century League girls’ swimming:

No. 7 Villa Park 113 1/2, Foothill 56 1/2--Cindy Henn set a Villa Park school record in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:57.66. Maureen Dunn won the 50 (25.70) and 100 (55.19) freestyles in Southern Section qualifying times for the Spartans, who won the league title with a 5-0 record.

In Golden West League boys’ track and field:

Santa Ana 82, Saddleback 53--Robert Fuentes set a school record for Saddleback (2-3) with a high jump of 6-7, which is also second-best in the county. Santa Ana (4-1) finishes second in dual meets.

In the Sea View League:

No. 5 El Toro 72, No. 6 Santa Margarita 64--El Toro clinched the league title after placing in the top three spots in the high jump, pole vault, shot put, and both hurdle events. Josh Petlowany set a school record after clearing 14-6 in the pole vault for the Chargers (6-1, 5-0).
