Conejo Valley to Play for Title Today

The Conejo Valley Big League baseball team, comprised of players from high schools throughout Ventura County, plays Macon, Ga., in the World Series final for 17- and 18-year-olds today at Floyd Hull Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale.

Conejo Valley advanced to the title game of the nine-team, double-elimination tournament with a 7-5 first-round win over Broward County (Fla.), a 17-1 victory over Macon and a third-round 11-5 win over Rockland.

Danny Greene of Newbury Park (.500 average) and Shea Johnson of Thousand Oaks (six home runs) have sparked the offense. Also providing punch have been Camarillo High graduate Joe Yingling, who had a three-run homer against Rockland, and Kevin Howard of Westlake High with two homers and six hits in the last two games.

Palmdale High graduate J.J. Rosati hit a two-run home run and Jon Bringuier of Granada Hills High had an RBI double to break a 2-2, fifth-inning tie in Panorama City’s 4-2 victory over the Long Beach Breakers in a first-round game Saturday in the Inter-City Baseball Tournament at Montebello Park.

Right-hander Peter Tuber of Granada Hills pitched six innings, allowing five hits and one walk and striking out four to earn the victory.

The Valley Vipers finished third in the 13-and-under National Amateur Athletic Union tournament at Moreno Valley last week.

Craig Cohen, Chris Nealon and Chuckie Tiffany were selected to the all-tournament team.

SOCCER

Michael Gwaltney has been hired as boys’ coach at Chaminade, the Eagles’ fifth coach in the past year and eighth in the last five years.

Gwaltney, formerly the coach at Servite, guided the Friars to a 55-26-12 record and was involved in the program from 1990-97.

AUTO RACING

A.J. DiMarzo of Saugus won the feature race Saturday in the Grand American Modified Division at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield.

Bob Kindoll of Quartz Hill was second, with Rich Ocheltree of Canoga Park third and Paul Lane of West Hills fourth. Rod Johnson of Canyon Country was fifth.

Cory Kruseman of Ventura won the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event race and Marc Hart, also of Ventura, finished ninth Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.
